December 2009 News
Here and There…….
· DINNER is scheduled for Christmas Day at First Baptist Church, 202 North Second Street in Albemarle, from 11 AM – 2 PM. Sign up sheets are posted near the office for your use…to provide food or to work at the dinner. All members of the parish are invited and encouraged to bring food or to spend some time working at the dinner…and all are invited to attend. Please call the Church Office if you need more information. Our thanks to Jim Senter and the Social Ministry Committee who are coordinating our efforts with the Community Christmas Dinner this year.
· A WORD FROM PASTOR JOHN: I would like to remind my fellow members that as of late November, we are $42,000 behind on our General Fund Budget. I am encouraging you – if you pledged for 2009 – to fulfill that pledge during the month of December. If you did not pledge, please make sure that you are supporting the congregation with your financial gifts. And for all of us, a special Christmas Gift to the church would be a big help in lowering this deficit. Thank you for your support of this parish and the work we do here in the name of Christ our Savior.
· NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS will be installed on January 3rd. They are: Ken Furr, Laura Krug, Tandy Lowder, Kim McGowen, John Williams. Associate Members are: Shua Ly, Austin Rogers, Jacob Throneburg.
· SCCM FOOD REQUEST FOR DECEMBER is Canned Vegetables. Please buy a little extra while you are shopping for groceries this month, and deposit them in the receptacle in the foyer. Many thanks for your generosity in this season of Good Will.
· LUTHERAN MEN WILL MEET at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, December 1st in the Parish Hall. All men of the church are invited and encouraged to participate. During December we will be completing our Christmas Project of providing clothing to needy children in the Community. If you’d like to help…checks may be made payable to First Lutheran Church and earmarked “Lutheran Men’s Fund”. Thank you for your support.
· PLEASE REMEMBER THAT FIRST CHURCH will not cancel worship services for snowy or icy weather. Use your own good judgment before venturing out on bad weather Sundays. But…if you can get here, we’ll be waiting for you!
CHRISTMAS EVE WORSHIP AT FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH
There are two worship opportunities on Christmas Eve – Thursday, December 24th – in 2009. The first service at 5:00 PM will be a Communion Service with traditional Christmas Carols. Our Candlelight Service with Holy Communion will be at 7:30 PM, with a musical prelude beginning 20 minutes before the service. A nursery is offered at both worship services, but candlelight will only be offered at the 7:30 service of worship. We hope that your family will join us for one of these services of beauty, hope and joy! |
SERVICE OF LESSONS/CAROLS OFFERED AT 8:30/11:00 ON DECEMBER 20TH Again this year, First Church will offer a Service of Lessons and Carols at both worship services on December 20th. This service is based on the one held annually at King’s College in England…and features traditional carols and anthems with readings from both the Old and New Testaments. It is a lovely service and promises to usher in the Christmas Season in a beautiful way. Please make plans to join us for one of these services. |
2009 NOON ADVENT SERVICES AT CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH
Our Downtown Albemarle Churches will have Advent Services on the first three Wednesdays of December…beginning at Noon at Christ Episcopal Church…with a light luncheon to follow. Services will be held on December 2nd, December 9th and December 16th. Please note that First Lutheran Church will be providing the meal at the very first service – on December 2nd. Please join your friends and fellow Christians for these worship services…and for the fellowship that follows. We hope to see you there!
FINANCIAL NOTE: Our financial books will close out this year on Thursday, December 31st. Please make any and all donations before that date. Thank you! |
